While I've always liked Natalie, I've never been a satisfied with her level of involvement in the show. An extra could do what she does half the time and that's not a shot at Traylor Howard, but at the writers for their inability to make Natalie a more significant part of the show. "Mr. Monk Takes the Stand" had a very unusual format compared to the typical episode. It actually started with Adrian Monk starting with his trademark "Here's what happened..." only to get shut down when the accused murderer's lawyer showed up and took him away before he told them anything. The opening to Friday's episode was surprising to say the least. It showed Monk stepping out into the street and getting hit by a city bus. Thankfully, it wasn't actually Monk, but rather a hit man named Frank DePalma who happens to be Adrian Monk's doppelganger. There's no doubt about it: this episode was "way out there" and I absolutely loved it. This past Friday brought forth the death of Kevin Dorfman (Jarrad Paul), a character that hasn't appeared very often in quite a while. He's only appeared on the show four or five times in over one hundred episodes. I've never liked the character because of how he would go on and on about virtually everything. This week's Monk had Adrian in an unusual place. He had to face one of his childhood bullies, Roderick Brody (Noah Emmerich). Brody was responsible for giving Adrian swirlies on a regular basis in the seventh grade. When this episode aired, it was Super Bowl time so it made a lot of sense to air this and keep with the football theme of the week. PSYCH and Burn Notice also did the same thing.
