On the surface, the gang can easily be mistaken as some of the coolest guy’s on TV, but when you watch a beginning like the one on this episode, it just makes you realize how lame they actually are. After leaving Dee to get mugged, the gang take on boxing in two very different ways.

After being mugged, Dee decides to start learning how to box and has Frank teach her. When Frank goes to the gym, he’s confronted by an old, rival boxer who still holds it over his head how he beat Frank all those years ago. Frank’s training routine is too much for Dee to handle, but she ends up turning to steroids or “performance enhancers” as Dee was told. Due to the side effects from steroids, Dee develops an anger problem and is over aggressive. Olson is pretty hilarious as a steroid junkie and the writers threw in little things like when Dee is growing facial and has to shave that really just makes the whole situation funny.

Mac and Dennis go to see an underground street fight and somehow come to the opinion that Charlie is the toughest guy they know. They decide to train Charlie into becoming a street fighter, only instead of working on offense, they work on Charlie being able to take blows. Sometimes it’s amazing how easily Mac and Dennis manipulate Charlie into doing things, but it’s also scary that in this episode Mac and Dennis weren’t trying to manipulate Charlie; like they weren’t purposely hoping that he’d get beat up; it’s scarier that they thought Charlie actually had a chance. Charlie’s training takes a weird turn when he starts using Dee’s steroids. It was funny because Charlie’s side effects seemed different then Dee’s. Dee wanted to fight and was overly aggressive and Charlie was hyped up and kept urging the guys to hit him with things. Charlie Day’s performance isn’t as good as Olson’s but still worthy of some laughs.

I thought this episode used Frank a lot better, the writers played off of Frank’s wanting to spend time with his children and while he wasn’t a main focal point, he still delivered a lot of laughs. The writers have also gotten very good at merging two separate storylines in an episode without it feeling forced.

This was a fun episode, which was obviously supposed to be a nod to boxing films and for the most part they do a good job honoring them or making fun of them; whatever you want to call it. If anything this episode should be watched for the ending; while I won’t ruin it for you, the ending scene with Frank running out of the ring was hilarious and it’s one of the great moments that just shows how good Danny DeVito is.

It’s episodes like this that are really what make It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia great. Taking the stupid things that these guys are involved in and somehow turning them into a complex plot is what this show does best. In “Mac bangs Dennis’ Mom”, the gang uses sex to play a dangerous game.

One of the great things about this show is how when something dramatic happens to the characters, it usually carries on to the next episode. We had Dee and Dennis apparently recovered from their crack addiction, but still doing “Charlie work” meaning that they’re doing all the janitorial work. Dennis in a bid to rid himself of the work comes up with a plan by taking the waitress that Charlie is in love with out on a date. Dennis threatens Charlie that if he doesn’t relieve him of his janitorial duties that he was going to have sex with the waitress.

Charlie gives in to the demands but starts a plan of his own that that ends up coming around full circle. Let’s see if I can get this right: Charlie convinces Mac to sleep with Dennis’ mom, Dennis see’s this and trys to sleep with Mac’s mom, but that doesn’t end up going the way he wanted, so he attempts to sleep with Charlie’s mom and that too ends up going south. The waitress sees Dennis going into the house of Charlie’s mom and assumes that he had sex with her, so the plan is for her to sleep with Charlie to get revenge on Dennis, only that doesn’t end up happening and the waitress ends up sleeping with Frank.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

This plan was actually a really good plan and had it not been for Frank, Charlie might have finally gotten what he wanted. Sadly he doesn’t and it was funny, but sad at the same time when the waitress sleeping with Frank only seems to upset him. It was basically a waste for Charlie, because not only did he not get the girl, but didn’t gain anything in return.

Mac sleeping with Dennis’ mom ends up leaving him disappointed as he actually finds himself falling for her. It was a funny turnaround with Dennis’ mom using him instead of the other way around. It seemed like Mac was in love with her, but it might have also been because he couldn’t tell if she thought he was good in bed or not. It’s hard to figure out if it was his love or narcissism that drove him to act like that.

The star of this episode Dennis though. Watching him go around trying to sleep with Mac and Charlie’s mom, but getting rejected was funny. We almost saw him have somewhat of a breakdown after both women told him they didn’t think he was very attractive. Dee was technically the only one who gained anything; by helping Charlie, she was able to get her bartending job back.

Frank once again just seemed like he was there. Him going out on the date with the old woman was supposed to be funny, but it wasn’t and it’s already starting to get tiring watching him going through his post-divorce phase. I wish the writers would give him something more interesting to do or maybe involve him in the gang’s activities more, because right now he’s just in the episode, but not causing any kind of real impact.

This was a good episode that really shows what the writer’s can do when they use all the characters (excluding Frank). It was an ingenious plan that ultimately ended up not going the way any of the characters wanted (except Dee). This was a very funny episode and one of the more memorable episode that the series has had thus far.

With Frank owning the bar now, Dee and Dennis don’t like the fact that their dad is ordering them around so much, while Charlie and Mac get to play video games and hang out. Dee and Dennis decide to pursue their dreams and collect unemployment and then attempt to seek welfare which ends up leading to the two becoming crack addicts.

The pairing of Dee and Dennis has been pure gold in the past and this episode was no different. The two try to seek welfare, but apparently they only give welfare to drug addicts, alcoholics, and people with other diseases (yes, I know they actually give it to people who need it also). The two decide to smoke crack, thinking they can get a doctor’s order that says that they smoke crack. The two end up buying some crack, even though they end up paying a ridiculous fee of two hundred dollars for one rock. They end up sleeping through their Dr’s appointment and then when they try it again, they ultimately find themselves sitting on a corner looking homeless. This was all some funny stuff and props have to be given to the makeup artists and the acting, because they really came off like a couple of crack heads.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

With Dee and Dennis gone, Frank tries to become a father figure to Mac and Charlie. It was kind of funny watching as Frank kept suggesting they do father/son things to do like playing video game and tossing around the pigskin. Mac and Charlie go to the welfare office to hire welfare workers so they don’t have to work anymore; plus it apparently saves money. The two kept making a big deal about using the word slave, because they didn’t want to offend the black people, but really they were just offending anyone who was going to come to work for them.

There was too much for Mac, Charlie and Frank to do. Dennis and Dee had a single storyline that worked until the end of the episode, but Mac and Charlie were involved in hiring welfare worker, the whole father/son thing with Frank, and then stealing the money that Frank put into a bank account under Charlie’s name. There was just all too much and we there wasn’t enough time focused on either of the situations to get a laugh out of them.

It was cool how they were able to split the gang into two groups though and bring them together in the end with Frank firing the welfare workers and hiring the new crack addicted Dee and Dennis, promoting Charlie to manager for showing leadership by stealing Franks money and firing Mac for being a follower.

This was a good episode where some things worked and others didn’t works so well. Frank really didn’t add much to this episode and hopefully the writer’s find a way to work him into the episode better next week.

Besides a beginning that wasn’t too funny, “The Gang Goes Jihad” was a pretty good episode. This week the gang is faced with having to get rid of their bar when the owner of the building next door purchases the land that the bar sits atop of.

The guys go to a lawyer who tells them that there’s no legal way out of it, they accidentally mistake this for the lawyer telling them that they should do something illegal to get the new guy out of his building. The rest of the episode had the gang coming up with different plans, each one being as stupid as the next. Most of them were funny, but the funniest one where the guys make a terrorist tape is something that has to be seen to be believed; You won’t be able to stop laughing.

One of the funniest things about this episode was that the guy next door was Jewish and throughout the episode, each one of the guys said the word “Jew” while the other two would think that was a bit out of control. It was funny listening to the discussions that they were having about in what context they were able to use the word. It’s always obvious that these guys never know what they’re talking about, but it’s still fun to listen to them argue. This episode also served to make fun of people who don’t know what’s going on in the world, because even though the guys knew there was something going on in Israel, they really had no idea specifically what was going on.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Frank was back again and he seems set on trying to join the gang. It’s funny having Frank on this show, because on one hand he tries really hard to be one of the guys, but then there’s times when he acts like a father like when Dennis doesn’t include Dee as part of the gang and he’s sitting there telling Dennis to include her. It’s weird, but it totally works in this show. Frank’s wife comes and she’s unfortunately every bit as mean as Frank has said about her; the slap she gives Charlie speaks for herself. It was disappointing that there were no scenes of Dennis with his mom, but it’s apparent that Dennis is her favorite and it’s almost sad how mean she was to Dee; She didn’t even care that Dee was wearing a neck brace.

Another thing this episode did well was carry things over from last episode like Dee and Dennis stealing from the house came back up and it was also very cool that Dee was still wearing her neck brace and Charlie was just now getting his cast taken off. It doesn’t make since though why Dennis seemed to be recovered, but there was something a little off on his face that would indicate that he hadn’t fully recovered. Things like this are really cool to see in the show.

In the end, it looks like Frank finally found his way into the gang by buying the land under the bar and threatening to change the bar unless he can join the gang. So it looks they’ve added another member to the gang and I’m somewhat happy about it. On one hand, we’ve only had seven episodes with just the original four, so there doesn’t seem to be another point of adding another character, but on the other hand, Frank is a great addition to the show, I just hope that they don’t use Frank in every episode from here on out and give us some episodes with just the original four.

This episode was better then the season premiere and it was very funny and cleverly done. Even the gang’s acapella version of “More Then Words” was for some reason. I knew Sunny in Philadelphia would come back with a better episode and thankfully they did.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia had a very successful first season. Going into its second season, it was unclear whether they would change anything or not. Well the good news is that it hasn’t changed much, but I have to say that after last season’s finale, I was hoping for something better.

Don’t get me wrong; the second season premiere has it’s funny moments and even introduces a new character to the show with Dee and Dennis’s father Frank (Danny DeVito). The relationship between the three is every bit as messed up and the same as the relationships between the four friends. Danny DeVito fits right in with the rest of the cast and it’ll definitely add to the show this season. Hopefully, they will use him sparingly and we don’t have to see him in every episode.

Even though this episode was titled “Charlie gets Crippled” I was still shocked when Dennis backed over him with the car. So we have Charlie in a wheelchair the whole episode; he goes to the strip club, where the strippers give him free lap dances and hang out with him. Frank tags along with him though, but seems to stealing all of Charlie’s thunder and it’s not just fooling around with the strippers they picked up, he literally seems to be copying Charlie, but doing it better. For some reason Charlie being handicapped gets the other three to pretend like they’re handicapped. Mac and Dennis both pretend to have Polio, which if they were smart knew that it’d be pretty rare nowadays to get it. Even though Dee pretended to be disgusted at the idea, she herself pretends to be handicapped too, walking on crutches and really nailing the walk.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Sunny in Philadelphia loves to take on controversial subjects and they did it again with taking on the whole handicap subject. The problem was that while there were funny moments the story itself was a bit weak. It also didn’t feel like this episode took it too far with the topic; it just felt like they could have done a lot more with it.

There were so many plots in this episode that there wasn’t enough time dedicated to the good ones. I would have liked more of the Dee and Dennis arguing over dad’s stuff, but that and Frank giving his money away just started to seem like a non-topic by the end of the episode.

There were lots of things to like in this episode and it was good, but after last season I think my expectations were just a little too high. I’m still looking forward to the rest of the season though and I have no doubt there are some good episodes ahead. It should be interesting to see what new topics Sunny in Philadelphia decides to attack.

Molestation is the word of the day when Mac and Charlie find out that their elementary school teacher has been accused of molestation around the same years that Mac and Charlie attended. After hearing this news, Charlie acts a bit strange leading Dennis and Dee to think that Charlie got molested. All of this made for one of the funniest episodes of the season.

Dee and Dennis teamed up this episode to try to get Charlie to come clean about getting molested. Dee and Dennis teaming up is always something to look forward too, because they argue like little siblings do, but they’re adults so it’s a lot funnier. It was also funny as they kept berating Mac for his lack of knowledge of the subject. The two also seem to be really proud of themselves that they took psychology in college, sure Dee majored in it, but she also flunked all her classes and Dennis did psychology as his minor, but passed all of his; like Dee said though ¾ and a quarter of her major beats whole minor any day. Watching the two use their schooling to come up with ways of getting Charlie to come forward just got funnier as the episode went along.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

During a party where Charlie got drunk, he came up with the plan to accuse the teacher of molestation and sue the school board for money. Unfortunately, the McPoyle brother’s took it literally and actually went through with it. Charlie goes to visit them and let’s just say they might be a little too close and they’re a bit weird. Charlie tries to talk them out of it, but they blackmail him into going along with them, because if he doesn’t, they’ll tell the cops it was all his idea. Charlie goes along with the plan and has to act like he got molested. Meanwhile, Dee and Dennis have gotten together Charlie’s family to stage an intervention.

The intervention goes off well and with the McPoyle’s there, Charlie has to tell his whole family that he was molested, even though he wasn’t. Charlie turned it around on the brothers pretty well in the end though when he makes it seem like he’s going to go along with the plan, but instead turns them in. They weren’t planning on cutting him in on the money anyway.

Mac wasn’t the star of the episode, but he was doing his own little thing because he became jealous that he didn’t get molested. Mac is such a narcissist, so it totally feels in character when he goes to see the coach in tight shorts and tries to get him to show some interest. Mac had the unfortunate time of being told he’s going to hell, but then again with this group of four, if one is going to hell, then they’re most likely all going.

This episode was funny from beginning to end and I think it benefited from only have one storyline revolving around Charlie’s molestation. In a thirty minute time frame, a single storyline works better then if you have more because you can really develop the jokes and the plot line better. Molestation is such a controversial topic, but Sunny in Philadelphia used it and turned into a hilarious episode. Sure this episode and many other episodes of Sunny in Philadelphia aren’t for everyone, especially victims of any of these topics. For the rest of us who can find humor in anything in this world, this episode works. Sunny in Philadelphia apparently doesn’t do cliff-hanger season finale’s, well this episode was arguably the funniest episode of the season and is a great send off for the first season.

Watching Sunny in Philadelphia, I can count on one thing in the episode and that is by the end of the episode, one or more of the four main characters will take a bad situation and use it to their advantage to gain something. The bad situation this week was a dead man.

The gang comes into Paddy’s to find a dead man in one of the booths. His granddaughter comes to visit the bar to just see where her Grandpa spent his last moments. Mac and Dennis each compete to impress the girl, by pretending to know her grandfather and pretending to know his friends. It was fun to watch Dennis and Mac compete and usually Dennis seems like the underdog in the group, but he’s able to match and exceed Mac when it came to sweet talking the granddaughter. Dennis played it perfectly at the funeral by having something prepared for the eulogy and then when getting to the stand, not using the paper at all. It was very impressive. It was a neat story that showed that Dennis can hold his own.

Seeing the dead guy at their bar reminds Dee of her “Pop-Pop” who’s in a nursing home. She takes Charlie along with her, because of her fear of dead people. Dee’s fear wasn’t just something she disliked either, she was honestly afraid of old people. Dee’s mannerisms in the nursing home were funny and little things like her going against the wall so a lady in a wheelchair didn’t touch her were the funniest moments. Charlie gets mistaken for Dennis by Pop-Pop who gives him the task of getting his suit from storage so he could be buried in it. What Charlie finds isn’t a normal suit though at all, but a Nazi suit, one that Charlie has a little fun dressing up in. Only Sunny in Philadelphia would be as controversial as to have Charlie answer the door wearing it. It was interesting how even though Charlie was having fun with the suit, he decided against bring it to Pop-Pop, because he thought Pop-Pop deserved to burn in hell, which means that Charlie thinks it’s okay to wear the outfit as long as he isn’t doing the killings. I didn’t know that selling authentic Nazi material was against the law, but apparently it is, because Charlie and Mac couldn’t get any money for it. You would think that a museum would want to have it in their, but I guess not.

The guys trying to sell the suit wasn’t that funny and in the end, Charlie got to burn something. The funniest parts with Charlie was with him visiting Pop-Pop, but after the first time, he doesn’t go back. There also should have been more Pop-Pop because he was hilarious in his own right.

All of the Dennis and Mac competing was hilarious, and Dee being scared of old people was nice add to the show, but Charlie’s Nazi day didn’t really pan out into anything too interesting. A good episode, but one that wasn’t great all around.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia likes finding a topic and figuring out just how stupid the gang can get with it. This week when Paddys get robbed, the guys decide to get a gun. Bringing a gun into these three guy’s lives is one of the stupidest things to do, but it provides us with some good laughs.

The opening scene to the show is always one of the best moments of the show. It always starts off with a topic that’s seemingly rational and then ends with one of the gang saying the stupidest responses. Thinking of how they’re going to get their safe back, Mac’s obvious answer is “we need to get a gun”. Once we’re introduced to sweet Dee’s boyfriend, Colin, played by Michael Rosenbaum, we could be fairly certain that the culprit was him.

In the beginning, Mac and Dennis bought the gun to protect the bar, but once they bought it, they were taken over by Gun Fever and just wanted to shoot it off anywhere. Charlie, who was opposed to the gun since the very beginning caught the fever in the worst way as he wanted to shoot it just like Dennis and Mac. Charlie took it one step further though by taking it to his house and using it to intimidate his landlord into giving him more time to pay his rent. Even after four episodes of seeing them do dumb things, it’s still surprising when they continue to do stupid things. The gun trick did seem to work though, because the landlord backed off and Charlie got more time to get the money back.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Once the Mac and Dennis put the clues together, they too were able to figure out that it was Colin who was doing all the robberies in town. Mac and Dennis, putting on their best Hardy Boys routine, see Colin at another bar romancing another bartender. Mac and Dennis decide to confront him, but trying not to let on that they know who’s the thief. It becomes very funny watching as the two execute their plan of telling Colin where they keep their money and trying to lure him to the bar so they can catch him in the act. They were so obvious also, that it wouldn’t have been surprising if Colin had caught on.

They set the trap and then wait at the bar for the intruder to come in and he does, the thief tries to get away and Dennis ends up shooting him in the head. The intruder ended up being Charlie. It’s funny how Charlie robbing the place got put on the backburner and Dennis ended up being the guy the others were mad at for shooting Charlie, even though Dee and Mac were telling him to shoot. The crew wasn’t even mad at Charlie for his stupid plan though and they actually were more disappointed that Charlie didn’t tell him he was strapped for cash. The scene in which they’re all in the room with Charlie does show that while they’re idiots, they all do love each other like family.

In the end, we hear Colin talking to Dee as he’s robbing the place. Things got a bit confusing here, because we weren’t necessarily sure if Colin was the one who robbed the place the first time, but it seems safe to say yes. The gang forgot to ask Charlie whether he robbed the place the first time, then maybe it could have been all avoided.

This was another good episode, there were less laugh out loud moments this episode then previous episodes, but watching this group of people never gets old and so far is always entertaining. Giving a gun to these guys was one of the worst things that the writers could have done, but it luckily for us viewers it’s entertaining.

There’s certain things that is starting to become clear as Sunny in Philadelphia continues to go along this season and it’s that this crew is always up to something that you wouldn’t think a normal person would do. In this episode, Charlie fakes cancer and Mac finds himself dating a tranny. This episode had its funny moments, but in the end lacked something.

This episode starts us off with Dennis going to Charlie’s place to get a basketball. The trip turns into something sad when Charlie tells Dennis that he has cancer. Dennis tells Dee and Mac and in an effort to make Charlie better, Mac and Dennis concoct a plan to get the waitress that Charlie has been after all season to sleep with him.

Things, of course do not go as the two want it. First Dennis ends up sleeping with the waitress himself and then they have to turn around and pay the waitress to go out with Charlie. The montage of Charlie and the waitress’s date was funny as it just involved Charlie buying her gifts and her doing absolutely nothing for him, including sleeping with him.

Mac’s situation this episode got a few laughs when he’s attracted to a girl at the bar only to find out that she’s a “tranny“. You would think something like this would turn Mac off, but it doesn‘t. Maybe it was because Mac felt good, because a hot “chick” thought he was good looking, but against his better judgment, he decides to continue hanging out with her, even though that huge bulge in her pants probably wasn’t the most pleasant thing to look at.

Click on the image to buy Seasons 1-2 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

While Mac’s exploits were amusing, it’s one of those plots that’s hard to believe. Sure, we know that the situations that these people get into can really be quite extreme, but it’s just hard to believe that from what we know about Mac, that he would continue on with this relationship with a tranny even if it was one as hot as Brittany Daniel. The whole plot really isn’t even resolved very well with Mac incidentally punching her in the face just when it looked like she was going to reveal to him that she had gotten the surgery.

When its found out that Charlie didn’t have cancer, of course Dennis is mad. Having Charlie tell Dennis that he has cancer is the only way Charlie’s plan could have worked, because only Dennis would initially buy it without thinking that Charlie would be up to something.

As funny as previous episode have been this one was just decent. There wasn’t really anything overall funny about the story, it didn’t even feel like this episode had a point like previous episodes. What makes the show so funny sometimes is that the subject of the episode usually reflects real life and they’re able to turn it into something to laugh at. This wasn’t a great episode and we know that Sunny in Philadelphia can do a lot better.

The beginning of this episode opens up with St. Paddy’s having a packed house. The guys are excited and happy until they notice that their crowd looks a bit young. They soon realize that the bar has nothing but high school students in it. Rational people would kick the kids out and start carding, but not these guys. Somehow Mac is able to get the gang into thinking that serving alcohol to underage kids is alright, because they’re in a controlled environment; by giving everyone a four drink minimum and watering down the drinks they deem it okay to serve.

The gang finds themselves involves with the drama of being in High school. Dee is smooth-talked by the captain of the football team, Charlie is asked out to prom by a girl whose boyfriend he fought off, Mac doesn’t do much this episode other then follow Charlie around, and Dennis is pursued by an 18 year old high school student.

Dee was never really the most popular in school, so the fact that she’s caught the eye of the most popular kid in school brings her back to high school. Her only problem is that when she meets a boy she likes she gets drunk. It was funny watching as every time she was with Trey she was drunk. One of the best lines that come out her mouth was when she asks, “Where were you when I was in high school” and Trey replies, “I was eight.”

Charlie and Mac’s journey takes them to a High school party where they get duped into bringing a keg. The two seemed like they were going to do the right then and just leave until the kids tell him how cool they thought they were. They proceed to participate in all the party games, getting drunk with the kids. One great moment at the party was when Dee arrives and they just look at each other realizing how weird everything is that they’re at a high school party.

It didn’t feel like Dennis was in the episode much, which is a shame, because he’s probably personally my favorite character on the show. He’s the only one who seems to have any sense in him, but he’s still slightly “not normal” like the rest of the cast. Even with the little time he got Dennis’s storyline where he’s forced to go to prom with Tammy, the hottest chick in school was still a funny one. In the beginning we were told that he has a thing for younger chicks and it was funny watching him try to resist temptation to watching him looking forward to going with her and hopefully closing the deal.
By the end of the episode everyone has been asked to the prom except Mac, which actually seems to infuriate him. Charlie has been talking to his prom date for so long, that he’s a little too involved in the high school Gossip. Dee and Dennis both lose their dates to the prom, because they were just trying to make each other jealous.

Yes, these guys might be the most idiotic characters on TV. Watching characters in their late 20s go through high school drama all over again was a funny experience. If done on a different sitcom, the plot for this episode could have came off campy or just not believable, but Sunny in Philadelphia does a great job of putting these characters into these crazy situations and while it comes off as weird, it’s always come off as something that you could see someone do. The whole underage drinking at the bar wasn’t that believable, because it seems highly doubtful that they wouldn’t get caught for serving minors. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia haven’t given us a bad episode yet and every episode has given us a new situation for these guys to get themselves into. It’s not the best episode so far, but it’s damn good television.
