The election finally came and David Alan Grier (DAG) nearly did the same. He and the rest of the audience celebrated the election results at the top of the show and pleaded with Barack Obama to not screw it up. If he were to fail, it would ruin everything.

The correspondent pieces were better in this episode than in the previous ones. Sure, there was a little more immature/toilet humor used in some of them, but it’s all still quite funny. I loved that “Poots” bit about the musician who had an instrument shoved up his behind and began playing beautiful music. I’m a little embarrassed by the number of times I laughed during that segment, but I couldn’t help myself.

DAG’s closing statements are always funny. He gets some very funny lines to work with when he goes on about what Chocolate News covers… this week he stated it covers everything “from pickin’ cotton in the sun to riding on Air Force One.” Haha, very clever, DAG.

As the election nears, it only makes sense for David Alan Grier (DAG) and company to discuss Barack Obama and John McCain more, but the rest of the show isn’t nearly as entertaining.

It isn’t that the correspondents themselves are bad at what they do, it’s that the writers on this show aren’t all that great. Most of the weekly segments aren’t very funny at all. Once in a while, I’ll crack a smile. One of the reasons The Daily Show, for instance, is successful is its segments are always real. They’re not sketches. Until this changes, and the segments are real and not sketches, I don’t believe Chocolate News will be nearly as funny as it can be.

The only reason I tune in now is to listen to DAG go off on people. Whether it’s his opening bit begging black people to behave until after the elections or going on about who’s better qualified, I always get a kick out of what David Alan Grier has to say. He speaks with authority, but he’s also damn funny at the same time.

After a good start to the series, Chocolate News‘ followup episode was a little weaker than I expected, but it remained better than some of the other sketch comedy on television (I’m looking at you, SNL).

The show opened with a hysterical little rant about white people and Barack Obama. DAG urged white people who don’t want to vote for Obama because of his race to vote for the white half of Obama.

This was quickly followed up by a bit about how high gas prices were affecting violence. Gangs can’t do drive-bys because they’re always running out of gas. Violence is down due to high gas, but now that prices are dropping, the violence looks to be on the rise soon. “God willing” – DAG

The baseball segment proved to be much better than the cross-dressing one. The show ended with a nice little shot at the Republicans who love to steal elections. An electronic voting machine was brought out. It was programmed to appear racist and rigged to vote for McCain, even if you voted for Obama. I really enjoyed that bit even if it was rather predictable.

It isn’t often that a show really catches me off-guard, but Chocolate News is one of those shows. I had heard about David Alan Grier working on this new show only fairly recently. The premise of it is fairly simple: a sketch comedy show catered to African-Americans.

Being white, I wasn’t sure how I was going to react to the show, but knowing David Alan Grier, I knew if anything, it would be funny. I just didn’t know it would be this funny.

The show is broken up into several segments. Some of them are sketches which feature DAG in costume and makeup and others feature other actors playing the main character. What they all have in common is they’re all hilarious.

The opening bit was something I’ve waited to hear from someone like DAG… finally someone talking about rap/hip-hop. Oh, damn, that was funny. As was the tribute to their dead former reporter. Seeing the old white guy take a beating was more fun to watch than should be allowed.

Some of the bits had DAG talking to a correspondent in the studio before and after each segment. There were a few funny exchanges, but when I saw these, what immediately came to mind wasn’t so much the comedy but the fact that everything was set up to mimic Bryant Gumble’s HBO series Real Sports. I used to love that show, but it’s on HBO.

The most disappointing segments were the Maya Angelou and N*gger Peace Treaty segments. Perhaps it’s just me, I couldn’t find a whole lot of humor in mocking Maya Angelou, though I liked her would-be speech should McCain win. And the peace treaty bit was pretty predictable.

Aside from DAG’s opening bit about rap, the segment I enjoyed most was the sketch surrounding PhatMan and the videos he did to promote No Child Left Behind. It was very over the top, but it had to be one of the funnier things I’ve seen in a while.

I’m very pleased to see that DAG and everyone else on his show is ready and willing to openly mock so many other people and their behavior. Despite my initial excitement surrounding Chocolate News, I can’t help but think that they’re going to run out of things to make fun of relatively soon.
