There aren’t very many new fall shows that I’ve been looking forward to in all honesty. Most of what I’m anticipating are returning series, with one of the exceptions being Fox’s Brothers, which stars Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Michael Strahan as a pair of brothers who haven’t seen eye to eye in years. Their parents are played by CCH Pounder and Carl Weathers.

There wasn’t a whole lot of originality used when coming up with the names for the two main characters… Chill (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell) and Michael (Michael Strahan). However, it’s not something that bothered me when I was watching it. It’s just one of those oddities worth noting.

It’s interesting to see the dynamic between each of the characters. Every one of them has their share of secrets and issues. They just don’t like to talk about them. Michael’s retired and broke. Chill’s restaurant is about to close. While their mother seems just fine, dad is another story. “Coach” appears to have Alzheimer’s and he isn’t aware of it.

Mike (Michael Strahan, R) and Chill (Daryl “Chill Mitchell”, L)

With this being a comedy, Coach’s condition isn’t taken particularly seriously. If he were my father, I’d be terrified. Alzheimer’s is one of the cruelest diseases I can think of. It can destroy a family. At some point this is going to have to become serious.

There were times when watching the pilot that I wondered how much of a comedy this was going to end up being. Because it’s the pilot, some of the backstory had to be told and that was a cause for a lot of friction between brothers Michael and Chill. Chill still blames Michael for being late to pick him up some years ago and Chill ended up getting into a car with a drunk driver who eventually lost control and now Chill can’t feel anything from the waist down.

The arguing was a lot more tense than I envisioned for a sitcom. With the backstory dealt with, I suspect future episodes will be a lot funnier, not that this episode didn’t deliver in that area – it most certainly did. The characters seem interesting, but I don’t expect to see this show continue with the low ratings it received in its debut on Friday. Fox is generally pretty quick with the ax.

Rating: 7.0
