The Gas Monkey Garage was humming this week with multiple projects keeping the monkeys busy. Richard even had his mind on other things, namely a problem with the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill.
I thought hell would freeze over before Richard would dare grace Gas Monkey with a friggin’ station wagon to work on. I couldn’t believe he would bring in that 1971 Chevy Kingwood Estate station wagon. It was ugly. However, it was in terrific shape.
When it comes to restoring and selling cars, the condition of the car really does make things easier. They didn’t have to work on the body for an entire week. I don’t think they did anything to the body other than perhaps wash it and apply the stickers for the buyer.
The majority of the work they did to the car was under the hood… and through the hood, quite literally. The new engine, coupled with the blower and all the extra bells and whistles gave that old wagon some attitude. I liked it. That back window and door was pretty sweet. I had no idea they had that kind of setup back in the day.
I have to say the 1980 MG Replicar Richard bought was a bit of a disappointment. Even with all of the work the restoration guy did to the car, the Replicar failed to impress. It’s no wonder that car never caught on back then.
I have to give Tony Taylor props for getting that pickup truck for free. Richard always gives people crap when they buy cars without his say. You can’t beat a free truck. The only cost was the $75 tow. Richard managed to sell it for almost $6000. Even with the little bit of work that went into it, there was plenty of meat on the bone.
Meanwhile at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill, Richard learned the place isn’t doing so well. It’s not making nearly as much money as they anticipated. To make money, you’ve got to spend money, as the old saying goes. Hiring Hank Williams III to perform appears to have turned out quite a crowd.
I’ve never been to the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill. It looks nice. However, I don’t live near Texas so a trip isn’t in my future. You would think the place would be doing well considering it’s featured on a television show.
