Until this episode aired, I had very few complaints to make about The Chicago Code. Tonight, I saw something that really bugged me and it likely is more a problem with FOX than with Shawn Ryan’s production team.
Before I get into that, let’s look at the bulk of the episode which had Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke) and Caleb Evers (Matt Lauria) busting their ass trying to figure out who was responsible for murder. I thought the connection to what was essentially a high-class cat house was a nice twist to the episode. Of course, the madame was adamant about it being a completely legal business, but it was clear that they weren’t just selling expensive booze.
The Chicago Code has some exciting moments in every episode, but rarely has any scary moments. That wasn’t the case here. That shooting in the cop car was downright frightening. You could tell something was going to happen. I’m just glad no one got hurt during the ride to the station. Wysocki would probably have killed Moose if his niece had been shot.

As the evidence piled up against the people running the club, the investigation began to ruffle a few feathers, naturally. The well to do don’t like to have their sex interrupted or their name tarnished by scandals. It wasn’t long before Superintendent Teresa Colvin (Jennifer Beals) was working her magic with the mayor’s office, trying to exchange new police radios for getting Wysocki to back off the club.
And this is where I had problems. Wysocki’s partner, Evers, seemed painfully naive… clueless even to something I felt he should have picked up on. It was obvious that Wysocki and Colvin were putting on a show for the chief of staff. Yet, he had no idea.
It felt out of character for Evers to not pick up on that. One reason for it could be that FOX aired this out of order [it was the third episode produced, but the sixth to air!]. Being new to Wysocki and Colvin would mean Evers wasn’t familiar enough with the shenanigans we have since grown accustomed to over the previous five episodes.
Despite the confusion due to a poor decision to air this episode out of order, I felt “The Gold Coin Kid” was still a very good episode. The fireworks at the end between Evers and Wysocki was a nice touch. Sometimes Wysocki needs to be called out, even by his own partner. Evers was right about not keeping secrets from your partner.
