Well I think you’d have to be crazy to expect Olivia (Anna Torv) and Peter (Joshua Jackson) to get together right away. They were both put through a lot. Anna Torv can play a pretty stoic Olivia sometimes, but there’s no question that Olivia was finding it hard to get back to her life after her doppleganger assumed it for so long, even sharing her bed with Peter.
Fringe’s writers have developed a fine knack for putting together episodes that draw parallels between two ongoing stories. I really liked how they brought these two together in “Marionette.” We had Olivia and Peter not really seeing eye to eye and then we had a crazy doctor who was trying to right a wrong by bringing back a teenager who killed herself.
John Noble as Walter Bishop, Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop
The doctor ultimately wasn’t happy with his creation. I can’t say I necessarily felt sorry for him though. That’s not the type of wrong you try to correct. Trying to reanimate a corpse is wrong on so many levels. Watching that marionette show in the man’s basement was something I wish I could have scrubbed from my brain. It was a whole new level of creepy for Fringe.
As for Peter and Olivia, things won’t be the same now. Peter did the right thing by telling Olivia about the relationship he had with the other Olivia. I really can’t put too much blame on either of them for the way all of this went down. I know I pointed out things over the season that Peter shouldn’t have dismissed out of hand and a few things he didn’t even notice, but in the end, he had very little reason to doubt the Olivia he came back was the Olivia he went there with.
I don’t expect these two to be seen rolling around the sack anytime soon. I don’t have a problem with that. It took a long time for this relationship to get to where it was at the end of season two. I can wait another season or so before Olivia and Peter are ready to see one another again.
I liked the Observer at the end of “Marionette.” I didn’t think we were done with these interesting fellas, but I didn’t expect one to show up right away. I’m interested in seeing what he’s up to. Thankfully, I don’t have to wait long. The next new episode of Fringe airs later tonight. Oh, I am looking forward to this!
