After Reaper got cancelled, I was curious to find out what show Missy Peregrym would land on; she really did a fantastic job on the old CW series and knew she would do a good job on another project. I didn’t expect her to be playing a cop, however. That’s exactly what she plays in the new Canadian cop drama, Rookie Blue. Missy plays Andy McNally, a rookie cop, straight out of the academy.
Andy is joined by four other rookies as they make the transition into being real cops. Andy seems to have somewhat of a leg up on the other rooks because her father used to be on the force. She can always turn to him for advice.

Missy Peregrym as Andy McNally
The first day on the job for Andy proves rather eventful. Her first day takes her to a rundown area of town where she and her supervisor respond to shots being fired. Andy ends up arresting a pair of people, only to learn that one of them is an undercover cop. It wouldn’t have been so bad if another cop hadn’t said something in front of a drug dealer that the undercover cop was trying to take down. Several months of undercover work quickly went down the drain and Andy took the whole thing pretty hard.
Her day wasn’t over just yet, however. She ended up getting a good tip which led her to a murder weapon and shooter. That scene in the abandoned building with the kid in the orange t-shirt was well-acted and set up.
The other rookies didn’t seem to enjoy their days any better. They were either stupid in the field or had a miserable time doing routine stuff at the station. Honestly, none of these other rookies interested me very much. They were all immature and selfish.
There’s one question I would have to pose to the producers: where is the series supposed to be based? It’s filmed in Canada, but it’s presumably supposed to feature either Chicago or Boston. That being said, the backdrops are woefully generic and the police uniforms and badges had no city listed on them.
Despite the good acting from Missy, Rookie Blue is simply too generic of a show to survive more than a season. I think we should expect more out of cop dramas now. I suspect a significant drop in ratings and ABC will likely pull it from primetime and burn the episodes off on the weekend.
