“The Sex issue” references the latest issue of the magazine for Mode that is going to be focused on sex. Along with the magazine, the episode itself also dealt with sex in a couple of ways.
Betty and Matt have been going out for a month and Betty’s ready for them to take their relationship to the next level, but there’s a problem and it’s because Matt keeps shutting her down. I thought this was interesting because for some reason Ugly Betty has never really focused on Betty’s sex life and they just cast it aside for the most part. Her relationship with Henry was odd because it never entered my mind that the two had slept together, so I’m glad that we got to see Betty in this storyline.
The scenes where Amanda and Marc try to makeover Betty were silly and also a bit awkward because Betty simply looks weird when she’s trying to be sexy. The problem ends up being with Matt who actually has slept with a lot of women. I find it a little hard to believe that someone as clumsy and awkward as Matt has slept with so many women. But he is rich. You would think Betty would be used to this because it’s very reminiscent of the old Daniel who used to sleep with numerous women. It was cute that Matt shared this with Betty, but she wasn’t alright with it and we see this as she goes out with him and starts misreading when Matt makes contact with a woman.
Hilda and Archie are continuing to date, but Hilda isn’t sure if she likes Archie. Hilda does have a thing for bad boys and Archie definitely isn’t that. Archie is kind, thoughtful and poetic, which is very different from the men that we’re used to Hilda dating. When the two are on a date, they’re ambushed by an ex of Archie’s and it seems to make Hilda realize that she doesn’t want to give up on him. To be honest, I didn’t necessarily get Hilda sleeping with Archie right after. It seemed sleazy and just a bit weird. I do like the two as a couple though because they’re so different and I really hope that they’re going to be together for a while, plus I’d like to see Archie interact with Justin.
There was also Wilhelmina who hasn’t been able to sleep very well since Connor’s leaving. It was funny watching her just doze off with her eyes open. She’s also not getting sleep because of the baby, which she doesn’t seem to be interacting with at all. Marc thinks it’s because she needs some sexual attention, but it’s mostly due to the fact that she hasn’t gotten over Connor. Marc hiring a model nanny in hope that the two get together was funny and it was funny that Wilhelmina ends up laying on him crying and telling him her sob story, and then to just fire him at the end was just classic Wilhelmina.
Molly and Daniel continued to be cute, even when Molly wants to read a poem at a poetry slam. The poem is about Daniel and their sex life, and when Daniel realizes this, he doesn’t want it read. I have to say that I agreed a little with Daniel – it is embarrassing to be a crying rock, but it was very cute to see him change his mind. I love this couple and I’m trying not to get too attached because Molly is dying and it’s going to be very sad whenever she does end up having to go.
I thought this was a good episode and I’m glad that they had Ignacio off on a trip, because the episode would have felt too overcrowded. This episode struck the right note and hopefully we get back to the business side of things, because I’m interested to see if Wilhelmina and Daniel can turn this magazine around.
