Betty and Henry’s relationship hasn’t been labeled and Betty likes it this way. It’s obvious that the two are boyfriend and girlfriend, but things are just so much simpler before you start to add those labels to them. In “A Mother of a Problem” Betty gears up to meet Matt’s mother who is played by the Christine Baranski. This role had to be really easy for Baranski because we’ve seen her play this type of role countless other times. She plays the role very well, downplaying Betty’s homely look, but being very subtle about it. I also liked how when the topic was changed and Betty was able to make herself look good at the dinner table. Matt came through at the end confronting his mother and it was a really sweet moment when he announced that he was leaving with his girlfriend.
We had the Suarez family trying to set Hilda up with Archie, the councilman. It was obvious what they were trying to do and I guess that’s the way it was supposed to look, but it would have been nice to see it done a little more subtlety. Things ended up working out though, because it actually seems like there’s a hint of a little spark between Hilda and Archie, so it should be interesting to see how this relationship ends up.
We had fun watching Wilhelmina have to give up some of her luxury items so she can raise money to fund the magazine and save money altogether. Wilhelmina was really going through it, but this meltdown at least gave us a look to see how incredible of a body Vanessa Williams still has.
Daniel and Molly continued to be a joy to watch as Daniel tried to find a way for Molly to survive her cancer. Daniel did come off a little controlling in this episode, but it was adorable because he’s trying so badly to help her. I have to say that it’s a very brave decision for Daniel to sit back and do nothing because he’ll essentially be watching her die. With Molly dying of cancer, every moment that the two have makes it kind of epic and I really find myself just diving emotionally into everything they do.
I thought this was another good episode. I do miss the little cliffhangers we used to get at the end of episodes, but I’m still enjoying watching nonetheless.
