This Friday’s installment of PSYCH had me intrigued right from the start with the disappearance of Shawn Spencer. Gus and Juliet retraced Shawn’s steps that may have gotten him to the junkyard where everyone gathered. Meanwhile, Henry and Lassiter tried to track down Shawn by using the clues he managed to send in a text message.

Watching Henry and Lassiter try to work together was humorous at times. Lassiter considers himself to still be a young buck when he tries to show Henry up, but when it came down to stamina, Henry didn’t have a problem running through the woods in an attempt to locate his son. It was Lassiter who always seemed to be lagging behind.

Teaming Juliet up with someone other than Lassiter was a smart move. I like seeing the combination of Juliet and Gus for a change. DulĂ© Hill and Maggie Lawson have wonderful on-screen chemistry and it showed that they don’t need Shawn in order to pull off a good scene.

James Roday as Shawn Spencer

Figuring out how Shawn had gotten caught up in something he should have kept his nose out of wasn’t too difficult in my eyes. I just wasn’t a big fan of what the two villains were up to. An armored truck is very heavy and trying to tip one of them over like they did that ice cream truck would be considerably more difficult to pull off.

Michael Rooker was terrific in his role as the reluctant villain. In fact, he and James Roday were both wonderful in some of those scenes in the gas station. They were both expendable as far as John Hawkes’ character was concerned.

One of my complaints with USA has to do with its breaking up of the season. They’re not alone in this. Several cable channels do this with their shows and it’s frustrating. I have no intention to watch USA’s White Collar series which looks to be an inferior rip off of any number of movies.

“Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark” may not have been the funniest episode we’ve seen in a while, but the drama was pretty good for a series which is generally nothing but laughs. I’d say they pulled it off quite well.

Rating: 8.7
