In just six months things have changed for Dexter. With a baby, a new wife, and two kids in one household it’s leaving him very little time to satisfy his dark passenger.  The warped reenactment of the opening video was pretty hilarious which had something going wrong with every scene. Watching Dexter put on his shirt only to find a stain on it was pretty hilarious. The writers have always been really good at putting comedy in to a show that very much deals with a serious matter.

DEXTER (Season 4)
Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan and Julie Benz as Rita Morgan

We saw in season 2 when Dexter was thrown off his game and had trouble getting his victim, so I thought that we’d get a rehash of the beginning of season 2. Thankfully we didn’t though. Yes, Dexter is off his game, but it’s not the same way. I think if anything this season of Dexter might help in lowering pregnancies because if any guy sees what Dexter had to go through in this episode, I would bet you would want to hold off on kids for a while. We saw Dexter’s lack of sleep affect his work. When he goes to court and brings the wrong file to the hearing, which results in the victim, Benito Gomez going free.  I don’t think we’ve seen Dexter screw up like this at work, so it was a fresh moment to see Dexter portrayed as anything but perfect in the fact of his peers. The whole incident didn’t affect anything else other then we had to listen to Quinn insult Dexter in just about every scene that they had together. There was also an interesting moment watching Dexter stalk his victim only for him to end up falling asleep in the car. Dexter wasn’t even himself once he captured his victim. He ended up having to rush it and had to bypass his usual speech, not to mention he was hyped on something because his usual calm composure definitely wasn’t there.

You know what’s new about this season? It is the fact that Dexter has found someone who we can truly see he cares about, someone who we know he’s not pretending with and that’s with his son. The first season had us thinking that Dexter does all this just so he can blend in. So the house and his marriage are all just logical steps to Dexter integrating with society, but we can see that this baby is the real deal and Dexter is definitely set on being a good father and making sure that he’s around to watch out for him. I think Dexter’s line about how he’s now killing for two says it all; everything that Dexter does he now has to think about his new son. I look forward to the writers showing off if or how this baby will change the way Dexter and his dark passenger does business.

DEXTER (Season 4)
Lauren Velez as Lt. Maria Laguerta and David Zayas as Angel Batista

There were some interesting developments with the rest of our characters as well which has Debra in a healthy functioning relationship. It is somewhat of a relief considering how horrible her dating life has been every season. We also saw the surprising romance of LaGuerta and Batista blossoming. I have to say that this is an interesting pairing and I’m excited to see how this goes during the rest of the season. It’s nice to see LaGuerta and Batista with some romantic storylines this season for a change.

Now we move on to what we can assume is going to be the big case of the season and that’s the “Trinity Killer,” this episode did a good job of giving us a teaser when it came to him. John Lithgow wasn’t given a ton of time, but the scenes he had were some of the crazier scenes that we’ve seen on the show. The killing in the bathtub was pretty painful to watch and I don’t know what was up with him running hot water on himself.

Rating: 8.7
