With Shawn Spencer getting the bulk of the screen time on PSYCH, I try to cherish those moments where we get to take a glimpse into Gus’ old days. As it turns out, Gus was part of an a cappella group in college with some familiar faces. Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live) and Jaleel White (Family Matters) played two of Gus’ old friends from yesteryear.
The trio isn’t very friendly towards one another. Gus parted ways under bitter terms over a girl and has tried to stay away from the others. Meanwhile, the fourth member was recently killed because of a video he shot of something someone didn’t want to get out. What that may have been remained a mystery to the end of the episode.

I rather enjoyed seeing Shawn envious of Gus for once. He’s wanted to be in a group for ages and he was eager to become that fourth member now that their friend was dead.
The biggest disappointment with this episode was Keenan Thompson’s acting. He’s never been able to pull off emotions in a convincing manner. He’s just not a particularly good actor.
While this episode of PSYCH wasn’t quite as loaded with comedic firepower, I did enjoy the uptick in drama. Very few episodes feature explosions (thankfully) and kidnappings. The twists near the end worked very well. I didn’t see them coming. Nice job, writers.
Also, I’d like to make a point to credit Boyz II Men for their remix of the PSYCH opening theme. I enjoyed the Indian flavor in the previous episode. Two remixes in a row is something new. This is starting to remind me of Weeds, where every episode had a new remix after a season or two into the series. I wouldn’t mind seeing that at some point. Do it as a one season experiment or something. That could work out pretty well.
