If you’re anything like me, Dexter is must-watch viewing at some point in time. I haven’t been a subscriber to Showtime in years, which is why I look forward to the opportunity to snag the new Blu-rays each year. The quality is impeccable. It’s almost like you’re right there in the police station sometimes.
Showtime is in an interesting position this year. Head to head against HBO, Showtime seems to be losing some ground. It has held a strong lineup of television with Weeds and Dexter, but has lost ground with the powerhouse True Blood over on HBO. Every week True Blood makes headlines with new ratings records, showing there’s no stopping that series.

Michael C. Hall as Dexter
Personally, I love competition. HBO and Showtime have a history of producing excellent television shows and when it comes to Showtime, it’s really hard to beat a season of Dexter.
I just finished watching Dexter Season three on Blu-ray and I loved the season. It was as smart and intense as ever. The writers did a wonderful job crafting the story of Miguel and Dexter’s relationship. Trust naturally played a big role in the relationship and Miguel proved not to be trustworthy, going outside of Dexter’s code (really Harry’s code) and killing innocent people.

Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado and Michael C. Hall as Dexter
The skinner case proved to be intense at times as Deb fought with herself and her colleagues over how to close the case and there’s no doubt that she’s learned a lot this past season. She is now a full-blown detective and I’m proud of her. Deb is a flawed character, but there’s no denying this woman’s level of commitment to something when she sets her mind to it. It’s her most redeeming quality.
The other big story with season three focused on Dexter’s new life. He’s no longer the bachelor. He is now married to Rita and the kids and is officially a family man. Despite all of the changes in his life, Dexter always seems to be able to pull it off. I don’t know how he does it sometimes.
Season four looks to be awesome as well. John Lithgow is joining the cast as the season’s big murder case. While trying to bring Lithgow’s character to justice, Dexter will be busy trying to fulfill his role as father and husband and it won’t be an easy thing to do. Life for Dexter seems to get complicated.
It could get interesting again when Keith Carradine returns to reprise his role of Special Agent Frank Lundy. I wonder how Deb is going to feel when Lundy steps back into her territory. They had an interesting history in season two.

John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell
While True Blood is a runaway hit and easily the best show on television this very minute, Dexter is coming back soon and will regain that title. Dexter returns September 27, 2009 with all-new episodes on Showtime. I highly recommend checking out this series. It’s to die for.
