This is one of the few PSYCH episode titles I honestly didn’t like. They tend to be kind of funny, but this one sounds like it belongs with Monk. There wasn’t anything amusing about it. I know, it’s strange to complain about an episode title, but hey, it’s one of the few bad things about this episode.
For some strange reason, I never quite get tired of seeing Shawn work his magic with the opposite sex. He’s a strange character but rarely comes off as creepy. He had no trouble picking up the waitress within the first few minutes of the season finale.
Gus, on the other hand, he was tired of it and challenged Shawn to ask someone out on a proper date, more or less. And Shawn didn’t even take the obvious route of calling Juliet. He bravely called Abigail (Rachael Leigh Cook). I was quite shocked that he would go there, but I’m glad Shawn did.

Maggie Lawson as Juliet O’Hara
We first met Abigail back in the second episode of this season when Shawn and Gus went back to their high school reunion. Abigail was “the one that got away.” I thought Rachael Leigh Cook was perfect in Murder?…Anyone?…Anyone?…Bueller?. She was not only adorable, but she was able to keep up with the pace of the show. Not everyone can bring that energy to the table and she seemed to be really at home in that character.
Abigail and Shawn set a date for later that night, but little did Shawn know that he and Gus would be in for a day they would never forget. Shawn was called out by a serial killer who likes to use clues. Shawn’s devotion to the case seemed to waiver for a minute, but everything changed when the serial killer grabbed Shawn’s mother (played once again by Cybill Shepherd). I’ve always liked Cybill Shepherd as Shawn’s mother, Madeleine. She seems to be a good match for Corbin Bernsen.
While the case had its intense moments, not all of the humor worked for me. I didn’t care for Gus’ lame attempts to bring humor to the table. I know the intent, but it was just hard to watch at times, especially the King Kong moment. Oh man, that was uncomfortable.
After trying to get Juliet for so long, she seemed to finally come around on one of the worst nights ever. She had terrible timing, asking Shawn out on a date when Shawn was on a date with Abigail. She was a little disappointed, but still wished him well. I suspect she knows that Abigail won’t be here too often and won’t take Shawn “off the market”, as it were.
I, on the other hand, wish Rachael Leigh Cook would come back. We didn’t get to see much of her in “An Evening with Mr. Yang”. I was rather disappointed by that, in fact. She doesn’t have to be a regular either, but a few guest spots next season would be very nice.
