It’s interesting that we’re six episodes deep in what could be the last season of Scrubs and the writers decide to focus so heavily on the new interns. While there has been talk of doing another season of Scrubs without the original cast, this episode has me wondering a bit about whether we’ll be seeing these interns in the next season.
I say this simply, because this episode focused a lot on the three interns that have personalities which is Katie, Ed, and Jo. Based off previous episodes Ed is the most likeable, with Katie and Jo following in that order. By the end of this episode the writers do a good job of making us not like any of the three.
Dr. Cox, J.D., and Elliot decide to make one of the interns their protege. Dr. Cox takes Ed for a reason we don’t necessarily get, J.D. takes Jo in hopes of perhaps making her into a more sympathetic person, and Elliot takes on Katie simply, because Katie reminds her of herself.
Most of the episode had the doctors in their own predicaments; J.D. has to deal with telling a father’s wife that he’s going to die by the end of the night and decides to use this case to see if he can get Jo to show more compassion. Nothing he does seems to work, Jo simply doesn’t get it. Jo’s character seems slightly unrealistic. It’s a wonder how she exactly got through med-school – don’t they grade you or something on bedside manner? We can only hope that by the end of the season that we’ll start to see a change in her or something, because right now, she’s not an intriguing character.

Dr. Cox spent the whole episode trying to figure out why he hates the new intern Ed. Ed, unlike Jo is actually funny. Sometimes he can be a bit annoying. He’s like Todd, but more annoying since he gets a lot more time than him. It was kind of a waste of time to have scenes where Dr. Cox is asking people why he hates the intern, because honestly does Dr. Cox need a reason to hate anyone?
Then the writers threw us a curveball by having shy Katie turn out to be the evilest intern of them all. If you’ve watched Scrubs since first season, you’d know that Elliot can get played pretty easily, even so, it was still surprising to see that Katie was preying on Elliot’s sympathy so she could get ahead.
Then we had the Sesame Street dreams. It was fun to see Elmo and Oscar the Grouch again, but usually Scrubs is better at integrating these types of things into the episode. By the end of the episode I didn’t necessarily get what Sesame Street had to do with anything and I was left feeling that Sesame Street was just used to perhaps get better ratings; because who wouldn’t want to see Elmo?
What’s odd about this episode is that it didn’t feel like anything happened, the interns haven’t changed, but their true natures were. While I would like to have less focus on the interns, I’m interested to see how and if J.D., Elliot, and Dr. Cox will try to strike back and whip the interns into shape.
We’re in episode six and Scrubs did falter a bit. It wasn’t that great of an episode, but there were a couple of chuckles to be had. Let’s hope the next episode gets the show back on track.
