Wow, the Fringe writers just seem to raise the bar every week, don’t they? What appeared to be a relatively straight forward episode turned into something much more interesting by the episode’s conclusion.

When Agent Mitchell Loeb collapses during a meeting with Broyles, it’s a mad race to find out what’s wrong. The trip to the emergency room was an interesting one to say the least. I was really taken a back when the doctor opened up Loeb’s chest to reveal a very unusual parasite.

Peter (Joshua Jackson, L) and Walter (John Noble, C)

I wasn’t alone in this reaction. Everyone seemed fascinated, especially Walter. The engineered parasite led them to a local person as well as someone in a German prison. Mr. Jones was believed to have been responsible for Loeb’s parasite, but he denied any responsibility during his meeting with Agent Olivia Dunham.

Walter was his usual self, going on about bizarre, random subjects. I always get a kick out of him even though I know he drives the other characters crazy at times. Broyles was upset with Walter again, but he also knows that there’s not a whole lot he or anyone else can do about Walter’s focus or lack thereof.

The Observer made another appearance in this week’s episode. He’s usually present for just a second or two, walking out of frame. His bald head gives him away quite nicely. I’m still quite interested in learning more about him. He’s a very mysterious character.

We learned of another one of Olivia’s past relationships. Although they didn’t go too in-depth, there was enough information given to let the viewer put together the pieces and try to figure out what happened.

I really liked that the writers continued the conspiracy story this week. This wasn’t just another filler episode. This is what I thought it may be initially, but the fact that Loeb and his wife seem to be involved in something quite big, well, that just makes me want to tune in even more each week. I’m glad I’ve got the time to catch up on my episodes of Fringe.
