This season of Betty is probably the least consistent of the series. It’s weird that after such a downer of a ending last episode that there was no Jesse in this episode; we just had Betty back to her normal self, working around the Mode office again looking for more responsibilities around the office and in this episode, she gets it.

There’s a company retreat happening with all the editors who work at Meade, meaning that Daniel, Wilhelmina, and Claire have to go. Daniel gives Betty the task of doing the final approval for this month’s issue of the magazine. There’s a problem with the magazine cover though and it’s that it has a picture of a girl in a tornado; a tornado that happens to be clearing out Kansas. Since only Daniel can stop the magazine from going to print, the first half of the episode had Betty, Amanda, and Marc on a roadtrip to go locate him.

The whole putting away the cell phones idea was kind of silly, especially considering that there were no editors working at the Meade office, so you would think that cell phones would be a must. It’s also interesting how often Betty, Marc, and Amanda are paired together now and they actually have this new friend dynamic, but it’s weird because for the most part Marc and Amanda’s attitude towards Betty hasn’t changed. Betty is able to get to Daniel in time to have him stop the magazine, but Daniel makes the decision to go along with the issue hoping to stir up controversy.

Ana Ortiz as Hilda Suarez

When the issue goes out, the media immediately start talking about it and instead of Daniel coming forward about what he did, he lets Betty take the blame from the media thus giving her the name Tornado Girl. I have to say that the whole tornado thing wasn’t all that interesting. We’ve been through this before and we know that Daniel isn’t the same person that he was in the first season, so I was left thinking what the whole point of this storyline was.

There were some good things though, like Daniel falling for Connor’s Fiancee. It’s nice to see Daniel fall for someone who just seems normal. It’s just sad that it’s someone else’s woman. It’s also good to see a scheming Wilhelmina back, while it’s not as fun as seeing her trying to obtain the company; this will have to do for now.

We also had Marc not wanting to talk about his wedding, because he feels terrible for cheating on Cliff. It was also interesting to see Marc help Betty out and then she ends up being the one to give him the advice to tell Cliff. It was sad to see Cliff so devastated and we can only hope that this isn’t the end of Clarc (like how I fused the names?).

There were funny moments throughout the episode, but overall I didn’t think it measured up. It was frustrating not to have Jesse in this episode, when he was such a major issue last episode. Betty doesn’t even mention him and she doesn’t even seem to be suffering emotionally from it this episode. It almost seemed like they were trying to make us forget he existed or something. It was also weird how Betty and Wilhelmina shared a “moment” at the end of last episode, but then it’s totally non-existant this episode. Relationships not being brought up or talked about was what made this episode frustrating.

While there was stuff to like in this episode, it’s not much more then a generic average episode of Betty and it’s sad, because this show could do such much better.
