It’s Halloween night and just like Sam says every day is Halloween for him and his brother. Of course, viewers on the show know that Halloween is the one day where even worse things happen to the brothers. This year was no exception. Halloween week is usually a reason television show to throw out lame ideas or episodes where the main storyline is ignored. Supernatural changes that by throwing out a great episode filled with character and storyline progression. This episode puts other Halloween themed episodes to shame.

Like almost every episode, Dean and Sam are investigating a string of murders. The first being a man who died because he swallowed four razor blades and the next being a girl who gets her face literally boiled. The relation between the two deaths is that both scenes contained hex bags. Sam is able to put the clues together and figure out that the death’s are all part of a blood sacrifice to make a demon rise; a demon that can summon any kind of demon.

This isn’t just your average demon exorcism either; the town just so happens to be the site of one of the 66 seals needed to free Lucifer. Castiel comes back in this episode and he’s joined by Uriel. It was interesting to see another angel on the show. Uriel’s role in this episode was interesting because we find out that he’s a hammer and that he destroys towns that are a danger to the rest of the world. This episode also marks the first time that Sam meets Castiel and it was funny watching Sam fall all over himself when meeting Castiel. It was even made more amusing when Sam realizes that these angels aren’t the type of angels that he imagined. Supernatural’s different take on angels is great, these angels are doing good, but they’re not going about it the way that most people would think and they have no problem killing one innocent human for a million more. The scariest part is hearing Uriel say that it wasn’t the first time that they destroyed a city.

The story took some interesting turns. We were always pretty sure that it was the cheerleader, even though we were make it think that it was the teacher doing all of this. Dean makes the choice to stay in the city and try to save it, but fails. The seal is opened, but the demon is defeated. Sam was forced to use his new exorcism power and this one took a lot more out of him and the look in Sam’s eye even showed a little demon in him. Sam made a promise that he wouldn’t use his power anymore, but the writers are doing a great job of putting Sam in a position where he’s almost forced to use it.

There was a lot revealed in this episode, most importantly was when Castiel reveals to Dean that his real orders were to follow Sam’s orders. It was also cool to hear thoughts from Castiel that were his own about how he questions everything and isn’t actually sure what is right or wrong. Castiel represents the human who questions God and it’s cool to see an angel who isn’t like the others. God has a plan for Dean and it almost seems that Dean will be forced to lead his own army by the end of this season. Dean being the leader of God’s army is funny because Sam was supposed to be the leader of the devil’s. It’s not really clear why Uriel would bring up Dean remembering what he went through in hell to Sam though. Dean keeping his memories of hell from his brother really is an example of the secrets that the two are keeping from each other and it’s making for an interesting dynamic between the two.

Seals are being broken as Dean deal with one seal, so it’s unclear just how many seals have been opened already, but we can probably count on all of them being open by the end of the season. This episode moved the story along and progressed our characters. Supernatural is having its best season yet and Halloween episode fit right in with the rest of the season.
