As the election nears, it only makes sense for David Alan Grier (DAG) and company to discuss Barack Obama and John McCain more, but the rest of the show isn’t nearly as entertaining.
It isn’t that the correspondents themselves are bad at what they do, it’s that the writers on this show aren’t all that great. Most of the weekly segments aren’t very funny at all. Once in a while, I’ll crack a smile. One of the reasons The Daily Show, for instance, is successful is its segments are always real. They’re not sketches. Until this changes, and the segments are real and not sketches, I don’t believe Chocolate News will be nearly as funny as it can be.
The only reason I tune in now is to listen to DAG go off on people. Whether it’s his opening bit begging black people to behave until after the elections or going on about who’s better qualified, I always get a kick out of what David Alan Grier has to say. He speaks with authority, but he’s also damn funny at the same time.
