In “Monster Movie,” the cast and crew get to indulge in their love for black and white horror movies. The result isn’t an all around horrible mess, but it’s definitely a disappointing episode to have amongst the great episodes that we’ve had so far this season. This episode is one that can definitely be missed.

This week has the boys back on the hunt in Pennsylvania to investigate a vampire murder. The boys revert back to their F.B.I. personas, but they stick to just plain Dean and Sam.

While Sam and Dean are in Pennsylvania, another murder takes place only the witness is saying that it’s a werewolf. Dean meets Jamie who he’s hoping can take away his re-virginity. The boys are led on the usual goose chase until Dean is poisoned by Jamie’s bartender friend who turns out to be a shape shifter. For some reason on Supernatural, shape shifters aren’t taken very seriously, in fact, they’re usually used for comedic episodes.

Jensen Ackles as Dean, Todd Stashwick as Dracula

It was obvious that the episode was supposed to be funny and obviously kind of a homage to black-and-white horror movies, but this episode wasn’t really funny and if it did anything to the black-and-white horror movies, it made them seem cheesier then they were originally.

Having the whole episode is black-and-white didn’t really do anything for the episode either. It did give it somewhat of an old school type of production look, but it wasn’t really all that necessary. Then again, I don’t think I would have been able to take Dracula seriously unless he was in black and white.

It’s really disappointing to have such a pointless episode in the middle of what’s been a great storyline. This episode really slows down the pace for this season and hopefully we can get back on the main story next episode. Every season of any show usually has an episode where it doesn’t go with the rest of the season and is just sort of filler in a way. So we can forgive Supernatural for this episode, just hopefully we won’t have to deal with another episode like this too soon or ideally for the rest of the season.
