I always say if there’s one thing you have to watch out for when it comes to television it’s time-travel. The reason why is that time-travel is one of the few things on television that we still don’t know about and one of the things that we still have any information on. Fortunately, Supernatural does it with class and taste though, just like they do everything else. Dean’s trip to the past proves to be interesting for us all and adds another episode that fans of the show can be proud of.

Dean gets sent to the past right outside a diner that coincidentally his father is at. Dean’s meeting with his father was interesting, but surprisingly boring, like his father. It was surprising to see that John Winchester was just a normal guy in 1973 with no past of hunting or anything. Dean assisted in helping his dad pick the car, because John was going to pick the Winnebago originally.

The real surprise was that Dean’s mom was the hunter of the family, which is something that I don’t think we knew before. Dean’s initial reaction to seeing his younger mom was that she was a babe, which is classic Dean. The writers did a great job with casting and all the actors did a great job. The resemblance between Dean and his grandfather Samuel really showed in this episode.

It was confusing to figure out exactly why Castiel sent Dean to this point of time, but by the end of the episode we realize that it was the day that sealed his mom’s fate.

Jensen Ackles as Dean, Amy Gumenick as Mary Winchester, Mitch Pileggi as Samuel Winchester, and Allison Hossak as Deanna Winchester

Dean kept trying to stop things from happening, he was able to get the Colt, which was only a myth in 1973 and had chances to try to kill yellow eyes, but all attempts failed. The Demon kills Dean’s grandparents and then sets off after Mary, in a shocking turn of events he also kills John. Mary makes a deal for the Demon to swing by her house, which will lead to him giving Sam his own blood and things end playing out the same way again even with Dean’s interference. Speaking of old Yellow Eyes, it was great to see him back and no matter who plays him, he’s just as menacing from when we first met him. The way he was getting people to agree to deals was just so manipulative and ultimately his manipulation techniques would end up working on Dean’s mother.

The problem with the time-traveling episode is that we’re not sure if this was the way everything really happened and if it wasn’t is what Dean did in the past the new past. Time-travel is tricky and this episode was no different, but it was handled decently.

Now Dean knows that the Demon had been trying to get an army for some kind of purpose since 1973 and it’s just coming to fruition. Nobody knows exactly what Yellow Eyes was planning, but we know it’s evil. God is worried about what Sam is doing, because the outcome of what he’s doing is unclear and the only thing worse then a troubled past is one that God can’t see apparently. Now Dean has to stop whatever it is and it now sets up this dynamic between the brothers, because in the end, it might come down to Dean killing Sam, which would be odd considering Dean sold his soul to bring Sam back from the dead.

What made this episode better was the emotional connection we saw Dean have with meeting his mother and the emotions that we could see about how much he so desperately wanted to save her. If Dean has a soft spot, it’s definitely his mother, and it was great to see an emotional Dean and not the hard Dean we’re used too.

Supernatural delivered us a great trip to the past and we learned a lot, plus it was nice to have some background information on just what type of people the rest Dean’s family was. Supernatural’s fourth season is going along nicely and it’s been one of the pleasures of this season. This episode was nearly perfect.
