There’s certain things that is starting to become clear as Sunny in Philadelphia continues to go along this season and it’s that this crew is always up to something that you wouldn’t think a normal person would do. In this episode, Charlie fakes cancer and Mac finds himself dating a tranny. This episode had its funny moments, but in the end lacked something.
This episode starts us off with Dennis going to Charlie’s place to get a basketball. The trip turns into something sad when Charlie tells Dennis that he has cancer. Dennis tells Dee and Mac and in an effort to make Charlie better, Mac and Dennis concoct a plan to get the waitress that Charlie has been after all season to sleep with him.
Things, of course do not go as the two want it. First Dennis ends up sleeping with the waitress himself and then they have to turn around and pay the waitress to go out with Charlie. The montage of Charlie and the waitress’s date was funny as it just involved Charlie buying her gifts and her doing absolutely nothing for him, including sleeping with him.
Mac’s situation this episode got a few laughs when he’s attracted to a girl at the bar only to find out that she’s a “tranny“. You would think something like this would turn Mac off, but it doesn‘t. Maybe it was because Mac felt good, because a hot “chick” thought he was good looking, but against his better judgment, he decides to continue hanging out with her, even though that huge bulge in her pants probably wasn’t the most pleasant thing to look at.

While Mac’s exploits were amusing, it’s one of those plots that’s hard to believe. Sure, we know that the situations that these people get into can really be quite extreme, but it’s just hard to believe that from what we know about Mac, that he would continue on with this relationship with a tranny even if it was one as hot as Brittany Daniel. The whole plot really isn’t even resolved very well with Mac incidentally punching her in the face just when it looked like she was going to reveal to him that she had gotten the surgery.
When its found out that Charlie didn’t have cancer, of course Dennis is mad. Having Charlie tell Dennis that he has cancer is the only way Charlie’s plan could have worked, because only Dennis would initially buy it without thinking that Charlie would be up to something.
As funny as previous episode have been this one was just decent. There wasn’t really anything overall funny about the story, it didn’t even feel like this episode had a point like previous episodes. What makes the show so funny sometimes is that the subject of the episode usually reflects real life and they’re able to turn it into something to laugh at. This wasn’t a great episode and we know that Sunny in Philadelphia can do a lot better.
