This past week’s episode of Monk was more of a tribute to the character Adrian Monk. It was a fairly unusual episode because of the tribute. Adrian’s 100th case was profiled by a Dateline-like news program, hosted by Eric McCormack. I’ve seen a few shows get an episode like this… the other being CSI, which had a camera crew follow them around during an episode. I just don’t quite get the appeal of these types of episodes. I suppose it’s to break up the mundane way episodes are shown, but really, it just doesn’t work.

In the case of “Mr. Monk’s 100th Case,” you knew Eric McCormack’s character was guilty of a murder within the first few minutes, so by the end of the show, you’re just waiting for the why, where, and when. Because of the episode’s format, I didn’t get that feeling of suspense I usually do when watching Monk.

Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger, Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk

What I really enjoyed about this episode was seeing some old faces. The show was loaded with former guest stars, including Howie Mandel, Andy Richter, and John Turturro. Monk has had a lot of notable names appear here as guest stars and Turturro was always my favorite.

We’re nearing the summer finale, just a week away. USA’s shows always seem to fly by because of the summer break.

Rating: 6.6
