The beginning of this episode opens up with St. Paddy’s having a packed house. The guys are excited and happy until they notice that their crowd looks a bit young. They soon realize that the bar has nothing but high school students in it. Rational people would kick the kids out and start carding, but not these guys. Somehow Mac is able to get the gang into thinking that serving alcohol to underage kids is alright, because they’re in a controlled environment; by giving everyone a four drink minimum and watering down the drinks they deem it okay to serve.
The gang finds themselves involves with the drama of being in High school. Dee is smooth-talked by the captain of the football team, Charlie is asked out to prom by a girl whose boyfriend he fought off, Mac doesn’t do much this episode other then follow Charlie around, and Dennis is pursued by an 18 year old high school student.
Dee was never really the most popular in school, so the fact that she’s caught the eye of the most popular kid in school brings her back to high school. Her only problem is that when she meets a boy she likes she gets drunk. It was funny watching as every time she was with Trey she was drunk. One of the best lines that come out her mouth was when she asks, “Where were you when I was in high school” and Trey replies, “I was eight.”
Charlie and Mac’s journey takes them to a High school party where they get duped into bringing a keg. The two seemed like they were going to do the right then and just leave until the kids tell him how cool they thought they were. They proceed to participate in all the party games, getting drunk with the kids. One great moment at the party was when Dee arrives and they just look at each other realizing how weird everything is that they’re at a high school party.
It didn’t feel like Dennis was in the episode much, which is a shame, because he’s probably personally my favorite character on the show. He’s the only one who seems to have any sense in him, but he’s still slightly “not normal” like the rest of the cast. Even with the little time he got Dennis’s storyline where he’s forced to go to prom with Tammy, the hottest chick in school was still a funny one. In the beginning we were told that he has a thing for younger chicks and it was funny watching him try to resist temptation to watching him looking forward to going with her and hopefully closing the deal.
By the end of the episode everyone has been asked to the prom except Mac, which actually seems to infuriate him. Charlie has been talking to his prom date for so long, that he’s a little too involved in the high school Gossip. Dee and Dennis both lose their dates to the prom, because they were just trying to make each other jealous.
Yes, these guys might be the most idiotic characters on TV. Watching characters in their late 20s go through high school drama all over again was a funny experience. If done on a different sitcom, the plot for this episode could have came off campy or just not believable, but Sunny in Philadelphia does a great job of putting these characters into these crazy situations and while it comes off as weird, it’s always come off as something that you could see someone do. The whole underage drinking at the bar wasn’t that believable, because it seems highly doubtful that they wouldn’t get caught for serving minors. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia haven’t given us a bad episode yet and every episode has given us a new situation for these guys to get themselves into. It’s not the best episode so far, but it’s damn good television.
