Sci-Fi Channel has announced that they will be cancelling the hit series Stargate Atlantis at the end of the fifth season. It’s one example of how a show’s budget has just gotten too out of control. Factor in the production costs (Canada is no longer a cheap place to film these days), actor salaries, etc and it’s just too much.

But there is some good news from all of this. There will be a two-hour movie to follow the conclusion of the fifth season, though we don’t know what the plot of it will be yet.

Co-creators of the Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper said, “We’re excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas. The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise.”

  1. I’d like to also say that, it seems to me, the stories shown on Star Gate seem awefully repetitive and a lot of times uninspired. I think they’ve overstayed their welcome, personally. Liked the shows, but it’s time to finally move on.

  2. I haven’t watched the Atlantis series; just the first few episodes of the original Stargate series.
