It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is unlike any comedy I’ve seen in quite sometime on basic cable. For a first episode of the season, it actually tackles racism and homosexuality in a very funny manner.
Charlie, Mac, and Dennis own Paddy’s a bar that makes very little money. Dee is the bartender who’s also the twin sister to Dennis. In this episode Dee brings an actor that she’s been hitting on to the bar named Terell. Terrell manages to get hired by the guys as a promoter basically to bring in more people to the bar which ends up happening. Only the guys soon realize that Terrell and the people that have been coming into the bar is gay. Charlie and Dennis agree that since there’s a lot of money being made that they should just keep the bar as gay bar plus Dennis likes the attention he’s getting from the guys coming into the bar.

The other storyline had Mac and Charlie trying to fit in with African Americans at a college. Mac’s attempt to fit in fails quite fast, but Charlie is actually liked and was even given a phone number. Charlie ends up using the poor girl though to prove a waitress that he likes that he isn’t racist after she heard him use a pretty racial comment.
Everything that could go wrong just goes wrong by the end. Dee and Mac put into effect a plan to turn the bar back not gay, which actually works, but things didn’t go as planned. And if the end means anything one of the characters were probably raped.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia isn’t breaking new ground, there have been other shows before it that have tackled these issues that nobody really wants to talk about. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen a TV show though tackle them like this. It’s Always Sunny in Phildelphia takes these issues and brings them out to the light, but makes good comedy out of them. Tackling these subjects just make all the controversy with these issues seem ridiculous.
This was pretty interesting first episode. The jokes are pretty funny and the characters are all quirky and kind of cool/uncool in certain ways. The cast has a real chemistry that definitely translates into this episode. Hopefully the rest of the season will be as good if not better then this episode.
