There’s something uniquely satisfying about seeing Adrian Monk go up against an intelligent criminal. But I wouldn’t consider the chess grandmaster to be the purported genius he was made out to be.
David Strathairn did a nice job playing the arrogant grandmaster, but this “genius” wasn’t able to plan on everything. He seemed to be a step ahead of Monk when he had his wife cremated, but somehow forgot all about his first wife and her untimely death.
Some of the interactions between Adrian and Natalie are normal, everyday kind of things, nothing that really gets interesting. But once in a while, something unusual happens. There were two of those instances here.

Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk
First, Natalie complained about not being paid what she feels she has earned. Adrian always seems comfortable in his apartment. You wouldn’t normally think that he’d be strapped for cash, but this isn’t the first time he hasn’t been able to pay his assistant very much money.
The second unusual reaction was when Natalie and Adrian were in the car and Kloster approached them. Out of the blue, Natalie blurts out, “I think we should kiss.” This was one of the few “what the ****” moments I’ve ever had while watching this series.
In the end, Natalie did end up getting paid, though she had to trick him into signing the back of the check. I thought that was more cute than clever, but hey, it works. Monk has and still is a fun show to watch at the end of the week.
