When I heard about CBS’s new drama Flashpoint, I immediately thought “oh, great, another cop drama.” The networks are loaded with them. But this is going to be different from the others in that it’s not a CSI knock-off. This could turn out to be a little refreshing.
The series premiere introduced us to the SRU team, headed up by Sgt. Gregory Parker (Enrico Colantoni). There wasn’t a whole lot of time devoted to getting into much of each of their personalities. Instead, we were introduced to snipers Ed Lane and Julianna “Jules” Callaghan, though Lane ended up getting the most attention.

Amy Jo Johnson - the only reason to watch the show
SRU is called to a downtown hostage situation where a Croation-speaking man has shot one woman and taken another hostage. When the situation gets out of control, Ed Lane is given the command to take out the suspect. I have to admit that his reaction to the shooting was surprising. He really seemed flustered by it. It wasn’t what I would have expected from a veteran sniper.
After the shooting, he told everyone that he was fine, of course. Any number of “I’m a cop, so I can handle anything” type of cliches come to mind here. It’s just the sort of thing that gets incredibly boring after a while. We could all see that shooting the man really bothered him.
The pilot wasn’t quite what I had expected it would be. It was interesting, but it didn’t really make me want to come back for more.
