Editor’s Note: This review was written during the season’s initial run. Keep this in mind when reading the following review.

We’re two episodes into the second season and this season seems to be taking a different turn compared to last season. Last season’s drama mostly dealt with Tony’s business and watching the inner workings of it. This season has taken a different approach which is focusing on the relationships in Tony’s life. With his mom dead to him and Janice pressing buttons, Tony has another unwanted family member come back to his life when Uncle Junior returns.

Uncle Junior has managed to weasel himself out of jail on the fact that he’s sick. He’s put on house arrest and forced to wear an ankle bracelet. Of course there’s a ton of tension between the two since Junior tried to kill Tony last season, but Tony still feels like he owes his Uncle something, because he doesn’t seem to be mad at him as much as he is with his mother.

One thing that we can all agree was that Livia seemed to be the topic of the whole episode whether it was Uncle Junior trying to get Tony to reconcile with Livia or Janice bringing up Livia and trying to get Tony to keep the house. Speaking of Janice, it’s become apparent that she’s up to something and that her coming back has almost nothing to with her actually wanting to take care of her mother. She’s trying way too hard to gain her mother’s trust and the fact that she tried so hard to get a do not resuscitate order really tells you something. Livia catches on fairly quickly though and has put Janice on notice. So much credit has to be given to Nancy Marchand, who really does such great jobs delivering her lines. The way she’s able to be normal and just pretend to be somewhat not all there is amazing.

The one problem that Tony had a problem with involved protesters picketing a construction site that he owned, but it was taken care of with a call to some of his guys. The twist in this story turned out to be that the man leading the protest was in on the whole thing. It’s not necessarily clear what deal had been made and why money was made from it though.

This season really hasn’t taken off. It’s just falling a bit flat in the plot area to a certain degree. All the characters are still played fantastic, but just don’t seem to be used enough. The addition of Janice or Parvati has definitely been an interesting one, because we’re not exactly sure of her intentions. This show is also suffering a bit from Dr. Melfi missing, she was a big highlight last season and it’s a shame that we won’t be seeing anymore scenes between the two. The Sopranos isn’t bad; it’s just a bit boring for The Sopranos. We’re hoping that it picks up soon, because it feels like it’s missing a lot of what made last season so great. The drama, the violence, the dark comedy we want it all back.
