The first part of the season finale opens with Jack on a plane. He asks for another drink and reads a paper. He’s saddened to find an article in the paper. It would logically lead one to believe it to be an obituary, but it’s not clear for whom.
A little bit of time has passed and we find a sobbing Jack driving a vehicle. He stops on a bridge and considers jumping over, committing suicide. There is suddenly a car accident and Jack is shown running towards it as a child is heard screaming.
Back on the beach, Jack checks with Sayid and asks him about the preparations for the attack on the Others. Sayid makes it clear to Jack that he is to continue his trek to the radio station, regardless of what happens on the beach. Afterwards, the camera pans around, showing everyone talking to their significant other or best friend. Juliet looks on as Jun and Sun embrace. Finally, Jack announces it’s time to leave and he leads the survivors away, leaving Sayid, Jin, and Bernard to ambush the Others.
As the group of survivors is making their down the shoreline, Jack is asked about his profession by Naomi and then shows him how to use the satellite phone, just in case something should happen to her.
In the Looking Glass, Charlie is being beaten up by the two women who found him, Greta and Bonnie. When asked about how he found the submerged station, Charlie claims Juliet told him about it. The women then decide to radio Ben. Charlie looks on as he looks for the information he learned from Desmond’s vision.
Ben receives a radio call from Bonnie and Greta and he learns about Charlie’s presence in the station. Ben asks Mikhail to visit the Looking Glass and see what is going on.
Back at the beach, the Others move in on the camp, while Sayid, Bernard, and Jin patiently look on. At just the right time, the survivors begin shooting, killing several in the party. Unfortunately, the three men are all taken hostage. Jack and the group look on from a distance and realize the plan didn’t work when they only heard two explosions, when there should have been three.
In another flash-forward, Jack receives a few stitches and we learn he saved a woman and a child. Jack’s ex, Sara, walks in and they briefly talk about the car accident. Not much happens here, however.
The group of survivors shows great concern for Sayid, Bernard, and Jin, but Jack remains optimistic that that the plan was successful.
Back at the Looking Glass, Charlie tells Bonnie and Gretta about how he is supposed to shut off the jamming equipment. The ladies are a little unsure of him.
Tom radios Ben and informs him about how the survivors were able to kill seven members of the Others. Ben tells them that Juliet has betrayed them. Tom and the group threaten to kill Sayid, Bernard, and Jin until they reveal where Jack and company are headed. Bernard cracks under the pressure and reveals all of the details, even that Carl told them about the early attack. Ben walks towards the doorway of his tent and stares at his daughter, knowing full-well she was involved in this. Tom then asks Ben if they should kill the three men. Ben replies “no, not yet.”
Ben draws out a map and he and Richard converse a bit about the plans to find Jack. Alex volunteers to go, but is surprised when Ben allows her to go with.
The survivors stop at a stream to fill up on water. Kate expresses concern for the three men at the beach, but Sawyer’s behavior is a little odd, and Kate calls him on it. Jack asks Naomi about the signal, but it’s still being blocked.
Desmond wakes up in the ocean and is immediately fired upon by Mikhail, who has arrived via the island shore. Desmond escapes death by swimming down to the station and joins Charlie. Charlie quickly tells him to hide because of the two women. Gretta and Bonnue come in and check on things when they think they hear something, but Desmond has been able to hide himself.
In a flash-forward, Jack looks over the charts of a patient and pops a few pills. The patient is the woman he saved from the car accident. He’s told by a doctor that he isn’t allowed to perform the surgery, but Jack is very persistent. Jack walks out and sees the woman’s son sitting in th waiting room.
As we re-join the survivors, Sawyer announces he’s going back to the beach. Kate then offers to come along, but Jack says it’s a suicide mission without guns. Juliet speaks up, offering to take Sawyer to a cache of guns. Jack reluctantly agrees to let Sawyer and Juliet leave.
Mikhail swims after Desmond and talks with Ben over the radio. They discuss the lies about the status of the station and the blocking of outgoing signals. Ben apologizes to Mikhail for not trusting him. Ben then asks Mikhail to kill Charlie, Greta, and Bonnie. This leaves Mikhail with a lot to think about.
We finally catch up with Juliet and Sawyer, who are headed for the cache of weapons and then the beach. Sawyer asks Juliet about why he and Kate were given the task of breaking rocks when they were held captive. Juliet doesn’t really know, so she jokes about it. She then reveals to Sawyer that there is no cache of guns. It turns out Hurley has been following them, so he offers to help, but Sawyer rudely turns him away.
Alex and Ben talk about Carl and betrayal. Ben tells Alex the reason she has been allowed to go with: he’s going to deliver her to her “new family.”
In the pit, John Locke struggles for life. He finds a fun in a holster belonging to one of the DHARMA employees. He picks it up and checks it for ammunition. He then points it at his head and hears a voice. It turns out to be Walt, standing at the top of the pit. Walt tells him not to shoot himself, but rather he should get up and move, as he has work to do.
The survivors are continuing with their walk to the radio tower. When we catch up, we see Kate stopping to empty the rocks from her shoe. Jack takes a minute to talk to her about Sawyer’s reason for not letting her go with. Jack then tells Kate he loves her.
In a flash-forward, Jack is driving with the newspaper clipping in his hand. He finds an empty funeral parlor. He asks the funeral director about a viewing, but no one else has showed up. When asked if Jack is friend or family, Jack says he’s neither. It’s still unclear who has died.
Jack asks Danielle about the group’s progress. She claims they have about one more hour of walking before they reach the radio tower. She then says she won’t be leaving the island. As the group walks forward, they’re all shocked to find Alex and Ben approaching them. Ben greets Jack and says they need to talk.
The first hour of the season finale was fairly exciting. There has been a lot of build-up for the ambush on the beach. Although the ambush was a mildly exciting event, I didn’t quite buy the fact that Jin, Bernard, and Sayid were able to become surrounded and captured so quickly. It just didn’t seem believable. I’m very much looking forward to the second half.

The best part of this episode was Charlie being beaten by the two girls–wish that would have been me
No seriously. The season finale was decent, but not something I was really expecting.

I also enjoyed seeing the unkillable Mikhail drop that grenade. I wasn’t expecting that–I should have known something like that would happen. But, why didn’t Charlie jump out of the hatch and close it? I knew he had to die, but that didn’t seem anything but suicide to me.
