Jon starts off the show with a question, “did we miss anything?”
Jon then goes into the disaster in in the New Orleans area. People who are blaming the President and rest of the government, and Jon thinks those people should stop, the government is responsible for their inept, incompetent reaction to the hurricane. Jon compared this to Bill Clinton, and said that this was Bush’s “Monica Lewinsky”. Jon’s analysis was hilarious but right-on. This didn’t seem like his regular delivery, it was almost like a monologue, like Leno/Letterman, only funny.
Jon then tells a story about a fat drunk, which reminds him of the media, very interesting story.
Correspondent Ed Helms is up next. Instead of being at the Superdome, Ed is at Giant’s Stadium, because he’s “scared”. The White House is now focusing on Bush’s approval ratings, instead of New Orleans.
After a commercial, Jon’s back with a timeline about President Bush’s “reaction” to the disaster. Jon gave a day-by-day list of the storm’s movements, and the President’s, which wasn’t very impressive. The bit ended with President Bush’s insensitive joke about Senator Trent Lott’s house.
Jon, after a commercial, welcomes Marc Siegel, author of False Alarm. Siegel was booked for the show before the hurricane, and he said that the reaction just proves what he discusses in his book. The government has scared people with terrorism, SARS, and a number of other things, which pose a threat against a small number of people, but something like a hurricane can impact an entire region.
I thought the interview went well, John and Dr. Siegel agreed on almost everything, and I agreed with what they had to say.
