The season finale of Prison Break aired tonight. I had frankly forgotten that it was the last episode of the season until the episode was about half over. The season has progressed fairly slowly in my opinion, likely being dragged out a little bit so that FOX could get three seasons out of the series before the producers bring the story to an end.
This brief recap isn’t really in order, but is loaded with spoilers.
In Chicago, Sara’s trial is over and all charges against her and Lincoln Burrows have been dropped, but the DA wants to charge Kellerman with a number of crimes. I wasn’t really expecting all of this, but I’m not surprised about Kellerman being arrested. Kellerman ends up getting killed when his prison transport van breaks down and members from the company shoot him and the guards.
Elsewhere, we focus on Michael and everyone in Panama. With Mahone holding Lincoln in a warehouse and demanding Michael bring the money and sailboat, Michael has to think quickly to get Lincoln out of harms way. Michael makes a few contacts and sets sail for the warehouse. Once there, the three guys do their share of yelling then Bill Kim drops by. He actually surprises Mahone, who was planning on killing Kim in a double-cross, but Kim has brought back-up. The brothers are able to escape while Mahone and Kim’s back-up get into a gun fight. Mahone and Kim both make it out alive. One of the contacts Michael made in town has helped him get a boat, but Sara is on board. Her presence alone is shocking to the brothers, but they’re floored when she reveals that Lincoln is now a free man. Unfortunately, Bill Kim finds the boat and threatens to kill the brothers. Sara pulls out a gun and shoots Kim in the chest… just as the Panamanian police are arriving. They chase the three into the woods and Michael eventually turns himself in, claiming Sara and Lincoln didn’t have anything to do with it.
Although Mahone is able to get away from the warehouse, he doesn’t make it far. He hops onto the sailboat of Michael’s and sails into a nearby town. Prior to going to the warehouse, Michael paid a local man for some cocaine to set up Mahone. He put the cocaine on the boat and alerted the local police that the boat was used for smuggling drugs. When police find the boat, they search it and promptly find the drugs and arrest Mahone. I loved this twist in the story line. This puts an end to his hopes and dreams of getting back together with his wife.
Bellick and T-Bag find themselves locked up in the same cell in Panama, but T-Bag tells Bellick he won’t be there long. He’s clearly got something up his sleeve, but Bellick isn’t able to stay around for long; the police take him out and move him elsewhere.
An injured Sucre just can’t catch a break. He’s been shot but he’s desperate to find Maricruz. He finds Bellick just as he’s being transported elsewhere, but Bellick’s unwilling to tell him where Maricruz is until he gets him out of jail. Sucre collapses in the middle of the dirt road running through the middle of town.
Later in the episode, we see that T-Bag won’t be getting out of jail as he had hoped. He made a deal to get the brothers down to Panama, but he screwed up by getting caught. Oops.
The season concludes with Michael being brought into a new prison in Panama, the Sona which we heard about from the General. Michael walks down a hallway which is devoid of any prison guards. He then turns and walks into a room which is filled with lights. And fade to black.
For the first 50 minutes, I was really enjoying the episode. The tail end totally sucked for me. When I saw the mysteriously bright lights, I thought “hmm, what’s in there?”, but when I saw that this was going to be the cliffhanger, my thoughts quickly turned to something more along the lines of “well that ending sucked!”
I don’t know what others thought, but I would have ended it with Michael walking through the first set of doors to the prison, but changed the camera angles, which totally sucked.
